We’re the DLR Space Applications Institute mbH – the DLR GfR for short. From our control center in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich, we monitor the operation of Galileo – the European global satellite navigation, timing, and positioning system.
Galileo is the only satellite navigation system of its kind under civil control – and it’s the most precise, too. On behalf of the European Commission, we head up all the tasks that ensure the secure and error-free operation of the mission. Something over 1.4 billion smartphone users rely upon each and every day.
JASP-R – Real-time GNSS interference detection
GNSS disruptions such as jamming and spoofing are becoming more frequent – posing a serious challenge to aviation. JASP-R, the new resilience service from DLR GfR, detects and analyzes these disruptions globally and delivers reliable data for safer, more efficient flight operations.
The system is fully European and helps ensure planning stability under uncertain navigation conditions.
Two ground control stations, 30 satellites, 24-hour service and 99.9% availability. And all of it can only be made possible thanks to our strong, dedicated team. For over a decade now, it’s been the passionate driving force behind our projects.
Satellites don’t take breaks. To ensure the smooth operation of the mission, it takes all hands on deck in the most varied areas – from the over 25 colleagues in our IT department to our over 60 engineers and scientists. Around the clock, they make sure that the message from mission control is never “Oberpfaffenhofen, we have a problem!”
A further 30 technicians complement the team with their specialization in the installation and operation of all the necessary ground infrastructure – from the smallest servers all the way to the 30-meter DLR satellite dish in Weilheim, which we use for the Galileo Signal Monitoring Facility (SMF).
We’re all driven by our shared passion for the work we get to do each day. For your benefit.
With an unwavering focus on the future and both feet on the ground: our managing directors, Walter Päffgen, Rolf Kozlowski and Christian Jenssen.

Navigating the Future.
We are the DLR Gesellschaft für Raumfahrtanwendungen mbH, DLR GfR for short. At the Oberpfaffenhofen control center, we direct and monitor the activities of the Galileo satellite constellation – Europe’s global satellite navigation and timing system.
Galileo is the only satellite navigation system of its kind under civilian control. And it is the most precise. As the principal responsible body, we take on all tasks that ensure the secure and disruption-free functioning of the constellation on behalf of the European Commission. This is something that over two billion smartphone users rely on each day.
We aspire to be permanently responsible for running and maintaining the Galileo constellation as well as future navigation systems and would like to offer our knowhow to other navigation services.
Take the High Ground.
Our expectations of ourselves go beyond purely meeting customer requirements. We do not settle for simple solutions.
The continuous improvement of our services motivates our employees, satisfies our customers and helps us to make the Galileo system more accessible. We achieve this through lessons learned sessions, audits, reviews and direct feedback from employees.
We are committed to actively identifying and complying with current legal regulations, client requirements, and other demands.
The sky is not the limit.
We do not only focus on the operation of satellites and ground segments, but also use our know-how to develop innovative concepts in satellite operations and navigation.
We have an effective risk management system that helps us identify risks and seize opportunities on a daily basis. Early identification, assessment and prevention of risks as well as open communication about potential risks are an integral part of our processes.
Space travel. Inspiring. Europe
We are one of the most unique employers in Europe. Always looking towards the future, we distinguish ourselves through constant innovation and passion for what we do. Thanks to the outstanding skills of our individual employees and our team spirit, we are able to master the challenges we face every day. The training, support and ongoing professional development of our employees are therefore central aspects of our organization.
A space mission is only as successful as the people behind it. As an important part of the European lighthouse project Galileo, we are dedicated to playing our part in moving Europe forward in digitization. We maintain constructive and trusting relationships with our project partners and contractors.
Discovering new horizons – together
We’re one of Europe’s most unique employers. We keep our focus on the future – always – and stand out through our continuous innovation and passion for what we do. And for our team, we’re always on the lookout for bright minds with pioneering spirits. The most important requirement? That they be inspired. Because you can only inspire others when you’re truly convinced of your capabilities.
