RESIST 2.0 Project Launch: Strengthening Protection Against GNSS Threats

The DLR GfR mbH has officially launched RESIST 2, a new demonstration project aimed at enhancing the resilience and security of satellite navigation services. Commissioned by the European Space Agency (ESA), the project will develop advanced methods and technologies to detect, assess, and mitigate manipulation, interference, and cyberattacks targeting GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems).

Securing a critical infrastructure

Satellite navigation has become a critical enabler for modern society – supporting aviation, transport, logistics, telecommunications, and energy networks. However, its growing importance also increases the risk of intentional interference and spoofing.

RESIST 2 (“RF analytical Evaluation of Signal Is Space Threats”) addresses these challenges by advancing technologies that safeguard the integrity, continuity, and reliability of GNSS signals.

Technological focus: Detect, assess, respond. Building on the achievements of its predecessor, RESIST 1.0, the project expands the technical scope with new operational approaches, including:

  • Raw signal analysis for early detection of manipulation and interference (e.g. spoofing, jamming),
  • Real-time assessment of signal quality and integrity,
  • Multi-source data fusion to improve robustness and reliability of navigation solutions.

With these developments, future GNSS users will not only be able to determine whether a signal is compromised, but also how severely and what countermeasures should be taken.

Collaboration for resilient navigation

RESIST 2 is conducted by DLR GfR mbH in cooperation with leading European partners from research and industry, under contract to the European Space Agency (ESA). Together, they aim to ensure that Europe’s satellite navigation infrastructure remains secure and reliable in the face of emerging threats.

RESIST for maritime protection

The Port of Marín will strengthen navigation safety with the deployment of a Ground Reference Station (GRS) of the ESA-funded RESIST system in the port premises.

The Port of Marín has taken a significant step forward in enhancing the safety, reliability, and technological advancement of maritime operations with the deployment of a Ground Reference Station (GRS) as part of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) project. This initiative demonstrates the Port’s firm commitment to adopting cutting-edge European technologies that reinforce the resilience of navigation systems against interference and ensure the highest standards of operational safety for vessels and port infrastructure.

By participating in the RESIST project, the Port of Marín continues to position itself at the forefront of innovation within the maritime sector, contributing to a European effort to safeguard critical infrastructure through robust satellite navigation solutions. It reflects the Port’s proactive approach to integrating advanced technology into daily operations -an approach that ensures both competitiveness and environmental responsibility through safer, more efficient maritime traffic management.

A regional collaboration in Galicia, driving innovation

As part of this deployment, the Galician technology company Triple Alpha, an advanced engineering firm specializing in advanced technological solutions, will collaborate as a supplier to DLR GfR mbH, validating the system’s application programming interface (API) within the RESIST framework. This partnership not only reinforces the technological ecosystem of the region but also highlights how the Port of Marín’s participation supports local innovation and contributes to the development of high-value industrial capabilities in Galicia.

Funded by the European Space Agency, the RESIST project exemplifies the successful collaboration between European institutions, industry, and regional stakeholders to enhance transport safety and digital resilience across critical infrastructures.

Next steps

Over the coming months, the consortium will deploy RESIST (Ground Reference Stations) in the maritime port of Marin in Spain and the DLR airport of Cochstedt in Germany to perform and end to end validation of RESIST under realistic operational conditions. In the long term, RESIST  will contribute to making GNSS-based services more resilient, secure, and trustworthy – ensuring their availability for critical infrastructures and users worldwide.
