Looking Ahead: SpaceOps 2027 Comes to Munich – Co-Hosted by DLR and DLR GfR
We’re excited to announce that the next SpaceOps Conference will take place in Munich, Germany, in 2027, co-hosted by DLR Space Operations and Astronaut Training and DLR GfR mbH.
At the closing ceremony of this year’s event in Montréal, DLR GfR had the honor of receiving the official SpaceOps flag on stage—symbolizing the handover and the start of our journey as the next host organization. This marks a major milestone for us and reflects our growing role in the global space operations community.
We look forward to welcoming participants from around the world to Munich in 2027 and to continuing the tradition of collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence that SpaceOps represents.
But before we look ahead, here’s a look back at what made SpaceOps 2025 in Montréal such a special experience for our team.
DLR GfR at SpaceOps 2025: A Week of Exchange, Expertise, and International Collaboration
From May 26 to 30, DLR GfR proudly joined the global space operations community at SpaceOps 2025 in Montréal, Québec. Organized by the Canadian Space Agency, this year’s event brought together industry leaders, space agencies, and researchers to share insights, discuss advancements, and shape the future of mission operations.
Our presence was marked by a strong lineup of contributions—both on stage and at our exhibition booth, which we shared alongside other international organizations including DLR, ESA, KARI, SANSA, Terma, and the Canadian Space Agency.
Leadership in Ground Systems Engineering
Leadership in Ground Systems Engineering
Rossella Falcone, L2/L3-GSOP Technical and Supply Chain Manager at DLR GfR, served as Chairwoman in two high-profile sessions within the Ground Systems Engineering (GSE) track. Across both panels, industry experts shared key insights on mission operations tools, software frameworks, and transition strategies between mission domains—highlighting the evolving demands of multi-mission environments.
Scientific Contributions from DLR GfR
Our experts also presented four peer-reviewed papers that reflect DLR GfR’s growing expertise and innovative spirit across various mission-critical areas:
“First Galileo Spacecraft Decommissioning Planning and Operations Execution”
Presented by Samuel Ocaña Losada, co-authored with Adrián Tejeda Canellada, this paper provided an in-depth look at the end-of-life operations of Europe’s Galileo satellites, including orbital disposal, tank depletion, and final passivation strategies.
“RAMS for Mega Constellations”
Presented jointly by Jacopo Baroni and Giulia Chinappi, this talk addressed the need for robust Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) strategies in managing large satellite constellations, with a focus on sustainability, fault recovery, and predictive modelling.
“Advanced Protection Strategies for GNSS: Enhancing System Resilience to Spoofing and Jamming Threats”
In his session, David Sanchez-Heredero introduced new detection methods that improve GNSS resilience, particularly against advanced spoofing threats, complementing the current Navigation Message Authentication (NMA) capabilities of Galileo.
These presentations underscore our commitment to securing resilient and sustainable space infrastructures, drawing from our experience in operating and safeguarding one of Europe’s most critical navigation systems.
More Than Just Talks
Throughout the week, DLR GfR’s booth served as a meeting point for discussions on satellite operations, system resilience, and international cooperation. Our team engaged with stakeholders, fellow operators, and researchers—demonstrating our continued commitment to secure and reliable space services.
Since 1990, SpaceOps has offered a unique platform for global exchange across agencies, academia, and industry, covering domains from human spaceflight to deep space missions.
As we return from Montréal, we bring back valuable insights, new partnerships—and great anticipation for what lies ahead in Munich 2027.
