DLR GfR at IAC 2025 in Sydney: Galileo, OPTIMUS and a Strong Kick-off

DLR GfR started the International Astronautical Congress 2025 in Sydney with a successful kick-off. High-profile guests, lively exchange at the German Pavilion booth, and two technical presentations on OPTIMUS and Galileo highlight how GfR contributes to Europe’s secure space infrastructure.

The opening day of the International Astronautical Congress 2025 (IAC) in Sydney brought many highlights for DLR GfR. At the German Pavilion, the team was delighted to welcome Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Chair of DLR, as well as State Secretary Silke Launert.

Many international visitors also stopped by booth 686.4: at the center were inspiring discussions about GfR’s role in European space operations – and, of course, the popular lucky wheel with the famous GfR ducks.

Technical contribution OPTIMUS: Optical communication in practice

A special highlight of DLR GfR’s presence in Sydney is the presentation of the OPTIMUS (Optical Multi User Service) project.

Our colleague Adam Santifaller will present his paper on Thursday, October 2, 3:00 PM, Room C6.4:
“OPTICAL MULTI USER SERVICE (OPTIMUS): Connecting Optical Ground Stations and Satellite Operators with Data Management as a Service.”

The presentation focuses on how optical communication can boost transmission speed and security. OPTIMUS connects ground stations with satellite operators, ensuring reliable data links – even under changing weather conditions.

Technical contribution Galileo: More efficient routine operations

Europe’s navigation system Galileo also takes the stage in Sydney.

GfR colleagues Andrea Maderi and Marvin Barnier will present their paper on Friday, October 3, 11:00 AM, Room C2.4:
“GALILEO CONSTELLATION OPTIMISATION – Efficient and Autonomous Routine Housekeeping.”

Their work demonstrates how contact time can be reduced by one third – without cutting activities. The result: less operational complexity, more ground station availability, and smoother constellation planning for Galileo.

With its presence at IAC 2025, DLR GfR underlines: Secure satellite operations and innovative communication solutions are a central European contribution to the future of space.

Visitors can find GfR throughout the week in the German Pavilion, Booth 686.4.
